The preparation depends entirely on the material

Wood

Steel

Durable and dimensionally stable, but the smooth moulded surface needs a proper key. It is cleaned, scuff-sanded and primed with a bonding primer suited to the substrate. Fibreglass doors with a woodgrain texture take paint well, though the grain will read through — which is usually the intention.
Spray or brush, and on or off the hinges
Spraying gives the smoothest result, and on a door that people stand directly in front of while they wait to be let in, that is worth something. It requires the door either removed or fully masked, with proper containment so there is no overspray on the frame, the glazing or the siding.
Brushing is a legitimate choice, particularly on a panelled wood door where the profiles and the grain hide brush texture. On a flat modern door the difference between sprayed and brushed is obvious at arm's length.
Taking the door off its hinges gives the better job — every face and all four edges can be coated, including the top and bottom. The trade-off is that your house is open while it happens, so it is a scheduling decision as much as a quality one, and it is one we will talk through rather than decide for you.

Colour
A front door is the one surface on a house where a strong colour usually works. The area is small, it is meant to draw the eye, and it is the natural place to put the accent that the siding and trim cannot carry. What matters is that it sits with the garage door and the trim rather than competing with them — those three elements read together from the kerb.
The practical caution is heat. A very dark finish on a south or west-facing door absorbs a great deal of it, which matters most on steel and fibreglass.
Curing
